July, July

“What does it take to make a city both liveable and lively?” is the main topic of this issue of Monocle. And our riot-shamed city made the cut, at number 20, in Monocle’s rank of the 25 best cities to call home. Right between Honolulu and Kyoto.

Quote: “…the city has yet to address its lazy attitude to contemporary architecture”. Agreed! But not to worry, we had a squad of blithering idiots downtown the other week stampeding through that issue.

Anyway, read on - this issue looks quite interesting!

WORLD OF INTERIORS ALSO IN.

Mesmerizing issue.

BAXTER OF CALIFORNIA POMADES

We now have a replenished stock of the entire pomade series. Just in time for the humidity (Weird…I thought it was July).

We also thought it would be a good idea to regurgitate their pomade bible on here.

SOFT WATER. Creates sculpted styles with flexible hold and shine. The perfect detailer for modern textured crops. Water-based an easy to rinse out, easily disperses throughout hair.

SLICK POMADE. High performance pomade that defines, separates, and creates texture without adding weight. Perfect for all hair types. Polishes hair while providing staying power to a multitude of styles - ideal for creating smooth, classic styles, adding shine to longer looks.

CREAM POMADE. Refines and smoothes wavy and curly hair. Creates touchable, smooth classic looks. Ideal for accenting texture. Well-suited for looks requiring a little lightweight detailing.

CLAY POMADE. Matte-finish balm that separates, defines, and molds styles. Infused with natural ingredients such as clay and beeswax, the texturizing formula lets you manipulate and retool hair looks for added styling versatility as it creates a strong, pliable hold.

HARD WATER POMADE. Defines mainstream styles with firm hold and texture. Creates piecy texture in hair. Controls hard to manage hair. An essential styling aid for creating hard parts and classical looks.

Summer Coffee

Now that summer is (finally) upon us I have an awesome suggestion for your coffee routine: cold-brewed coffee. Most of you have probably had iced coffee from either a coffee syrup or hot-brewed coffee that is then chilled. Cold-brewing is a whole new coffee world. It takes a little pre-planning, but the result will give you a new appreciation for your beans. Any subtle flavour notes will become more pronounced, and the bitterness, which the heat normally would bring out, is non-existant.

Basically you take about a cup of freshly ground coffee, add about 4 cups of water, and let sit in the fridge for about 12 hours. Then strain through a coffee filter. If you like your coffee strong, then this will be perfect, or dilute with a little milk. I used my handy-dandy milk foamer to make cold vanilla milk foam for the top too, because I’m poncy like that.

I used the Stumptown Guatemala Finca El Injerto Bourbon, and the chocolately fullness of the bean was so amazing done this way. I think next I’m going to try the Stumptown Ethiopia Nano Challa for something a little more dynamic, maybe with a touch of buckwheat honey to round it out..

Happy summer everyone!
